Construction of the Cell Biology Laboratory (CBL)

The space for the CBL was former an office for the director and the coordinator of the Carrier QFB (Pharmacy). Therefore mayor reconstructions were necessary, e.g. making a drainage, guarantee sufficient current, installing tubings for water, gases, implementing safety systems like a emergency cut-off, emergency shower with indepent water system and last but no least insulate the laboratory against possible contaminations (as it is very dry here, the atmosphere has a lost of dust), and making all surfaces smooth and resistent against chemicals and desinfectants.

The construction, under the control of Ing. Martínez, began on Monday, 13.03.2008:

21.04.2008: Inauguration of the CBL

After the official inauguration the proceeding was very slow. The construction, like connceting water and gas or installing safety systems, finished in June and so I could move to the CBL at 01.07.2008.
The finishing of the furniture (e.g. installing the anti-vibration system for the balance and microscope) was at [still not terminated, 30.11.2008], terminating the construction phase of the CBL.
An extraction hood was considered as too expensive for the administration of the university and therefore it have to be bought later on. Unfortunately, together with the extraction hood was also cancelled the safety gabinet for corrosive and flammable reagents, which was planned to be integrated into the extraction hood.
Due to the bad planeation of the laboratory by the architect of CUCI, a big sliding instead of a normal door was installed, which makes it difficult to maintain the laboratory free of dust and insects! Also a part of the exterior wall is made of plaster(!) thus humidity is entering and probably in the near future we may have problems with fungal growth (in a cell culture laboratory).
Meanwhile we acquired some basic equipment like pH-meter, balance, micro-centrifuge, refrigerator, freezer, autoclave, photometer, biological safety cabinet, refrigerated centrifuge, thermocycler and incubator [30.11.2008]. Already bought but still not delivered are an epifluorescence microscope, shaker, gel electrophoresis system, power supply, UV-transilluminator with photodocumentation and electroporator [30.11.2008]. Still missing are a CO2-incubator and tank for liquid nitrogen.
Having this equipment the CBL would be a functional laboratory.
Also we started to order basic reagents, media and enzymes for iniciating the molecular biological work. Also here we are still waiting for the delivery of the goods.
